Daniel Morganstern

Daniel Morganstern has served as principal cellist for the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the American Ballet Theater at the Metropolitan Opera House for over 35 years. He has also served as principal cellist for the Aspen Festival Orchestra, the Joffrey Ballet, and the American National Opera Company.

Musicians who have coached with him have won positions in orchestras including, among others, the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, and Phoenix Symphony.

Over his long career, he has served extensively on the audition committees of the American Ballet Theater and the Chicago Lyric Opera, where he was chairman for two years.

Praised as a "first-rate cellist" in the New York Times and a "superb cellist" in The Strad, he has presented most of the standard repertoire in his New York recitals that have included three at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, five at Carnegie Recital Hall, and others broadcast over WQXR, WNYC, and WBAI. As a member of the American Chamber Trio, he has toured extensively nationally and internationally.

His recordings include sonatas by Chopin, Brahms, Schubert, Beethoven (complete), and Rachmaninoff; trios by Brahms (complete), Beethoven, Ravel, and Tchaikovsky; and duos by Ravel and Kodaly. His editions for International Music Company include the Tchaikovsky "Rococo" Variations, the Boccherini Concerto, Cello Solos from Opera and Ballet, the cello parts to the three Brahms Trios, and Fundamentals of Cello Technique.

Mr. Morganstern has also edited the cello part of Tosca for Ovation Press, the Wonderland Rags by William Ryden for Masters Music Publications, and his treatise Practice for Performance is published by Mel Bay. He has been on the faculty of the Aspen Music School and the String Academy at Indiana University, and is currently Artist Teacher at Valparaiso University.
