REQUIRED CLASSES
ADVANCED PRACTICE TECHNIQUES
This very popular six-week course is taught by instructors Skye Carman, Melissa Kraut, and Patricia McCarty. Fee: $120.
This supplementary course, obligatory for all on-campus first-year violin, viola and cello students age 13-17, will help the student get the most out of his/her individual practice time. The course consists of one one-hour classe taught by Skye Carman in groups of four to eight students and five 20 minute individual practice help sessions given by Ms. Carman, Dr. Kraut and Ms. McCarty. The following are some of the topics that will be addressed:
- warming up your ears as well as your fingers
- attention to detail in passage work
- what ways of practicing are time-wasters
- how to avoid the need to correct wrong notes or rhythms
- how to organize practice sessions in terms of hours, days, and weeks
- how to help prevent playing injuries
The Course is also open on a first-come, first-serve basis to:
- returning students of all ages
- new students younger than 13 or older than 17
- off campus students
- students who have taken the course in the past
For students who have already taken this course, there will be no group class. They will receive six individual practice sessions in place of five.
